SoJo Idea: Opening a School Store
STORY: A space for a school store was added during the building renovation in 2013. A store was put into place, but it is only opened for special occasions such as parent-teacher conferences. The original intention was to have a student run store, open daily, during school hours.
RESPONSE: The response to the problem could be featuring several different high schools in the Omaha Metro who operate student run school stores. We could find out their operation procedures, expenditures v. proceeds, benefits to students, and other factors. We could then compare these responses to our own school, and see if the problem of not having a daily school store could feasibly be solved.
EVIDENCE: The evidence would be mined from the data collected from multiple schools when compared to ours.
INSIGHTS: The student reporters would need to make sense of the numbers, breaking them down for the readers. They would need to be supported through interviews of school leaders (teachers, students, and principals) directly involved with the school store.
LIMITATIONS: Varying school budgets and school schedules (Block v. traditional) could pose challenges. Other schools may not keep important records regarding the school stores, or may report them differently, which could make creating direct comparisons challenging.
