Solutions Journalism project
For my Solutions Journalism lesson, I will expand on my in-depth lesson plan that I give to my intro to journalism students.
I would like my students to investigate the impact that our districts’ switching to standards based grading has had on our graduation rate, homework completion and anything else that students discover. Should the district continue using this grading scale? Who does it hurt? Who does it benefit? Who was responsible for the decision making?
Students will work on this in groups of 3 or 4. Students will be required to write multiple stories about the topic and cover it in different formats.
Part one: Starting Questions
- What stories could be written about this subject? (Remember, it is better to come up with more story ideas than you will actually write. It is smart to have something to fall back on.)
- Could any of these become its own separate feature? Which one(s)?
- Who are some people you will interview?
- Where else can you look for information? The library? Internet? Other papers?
- What other types of information could be obtained? Can you visit a place or an event? Students opinions through a survey?
- What information will you place in your fact boxes?
- What ideas do you have for artwork?
- What will your poll be over? Who will you poll? How will you display your results?
