A free summer seminar for experienced high school journalism advisers

From the 23 teachers who attended this workshop in July 2019, we have included Solutions Journalism Story Ideas, other Story Ideas for a whole range of topics and Tech Examples of something they learned, many of these for data visualization, plus some resources anyone can use in the future for these topics.

Fun with Flourish

I’m still floored by all the tools Mike Reilley showed us. So many ideas are running through my mind. I’ve been playing around with Flourish and came up with this graphic.

I used this particular set of data because I teach in a rapidly growing school district. In fact, we will vote in August to build two more schools. My students write about growth often, so being able to show them how to do something like this will be incredibly helpful.

I was so excited about it, I’ve already texted a link to my students. Now they’re excited. And that makes it all worthwhile.

  1. This is a great idea and graphic. We were a two high school district forever. In a matter of a five-year span it increased to six. This would be a great way to show that growth. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I love this info graph! My district is growing like crazy, and this would be a fun, unique way to help our readers visualize the changes. Thanks for the idea!

  3. This will also be a way to illustrate a decline in enrollment that is happening in my school district in Illinois.
